In 1989, Jay Storey had $5,000 in borrowed money, a spot at 13th and Oliver in Wichita, and furniture on consignment. He taped up empty boxes and lined them against the walls to make the store look fuller than it was. Success was the only option. That mindset became the foundation of everything Wichita Furniture & Mattress is today.

The company still starts every meeting with their mission: honor God, dominate their trade area, exceed customer expectations. VP of Sales Scott Henderson calls the culture contagious. Growth mindset is the term they use constantly, never satisfied with being idle. “The bigger you get, the more average you can become,” he says. “But it doesn’t mean you have to.”

Three times the customer asked about stock, three times Jay ran to a back computer to check. By the third trip, the customer was gone. Jason White’s team uses barcode scanning to receive goods, and from that point they can follow each item every step of the way. The moment a product is scanned in, the system automatically texts the customer to let them know their order has arrived. Most of the time, the customer knows before the store team does.
